Nikki Haley accepts the office of governor of South Carolina

Nikki Haley accepts the office of governor of South Carolina
The South Carolina governor-elect will be sworn into office, marking the first time a woman has led the state, and as an Indian American, the first non-white leader as well. Thousands of well-wishers will brave the cold weather to mark the occasion.

Preparations are underway for the inauguration of Governor-elect Nikki Haley. Wednesday, the state will welcome it's 116th governor.

Governor-elect Haley made history on election night, and is now on the verge of becoming the new leader of South Carolina, the state's first non-white and female governor. Dr. Jeri Cabot, a political science professor at the College of Charleston says Haley rode the Tea Party wave to the governor's mansion. Cabot says, "She broke through barriers that this state had put in place. It is really a remarkable story. It's about timing, it's about the wave of conservative ideology that broke over the United States starting with the post 2008 election."

The soon to be governor of South Carolina received several prominent and key endorsements during her campaign run, including former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford, and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Cabot says, "South Carolina reform put up hundreds and thousands of dollars to do an add campaign during the primaries, and you had the Palin visit as well, and the backlash against the people coming out about these elicit sexual affairs. I think that actually helped her."

38-year-old Haley was born in Bamberg, South Carolina, and is of Indian descent. Cabot says her unique qualities and her message connects with voters. Dr. Cabot says, "She personified her message. She was different. She looked different. She dressed differently. Her colors were different. I mean when you think back, and you remember those debates during the primary, and how she stood out. She would always be in the middle in her bright colored suits. She really personified the message. I'm going to do things differently. For South Carolina it means national attention for us. It comes down to what she can accomplish."
Governor-elect Nikki Haley represented Lexington county in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2010.
Background of Nikki Haley

PERSONAL LIFE
Nikki Haley was born in Bamberg, South Carolina. Her parents Dr. Ajit and Raj Randhawa are Indian Punjabi Sikh immigrants from Amritsar and she has an older brother Mitti, sister Simran Singh, and younger brother Charan. She went to Clemson University and majored in Accounting and then joined the FCR Corporation before joining her mother's business in 1994.[9]The family business grew to a multi million dollar company.

Haley was raised in a Sikh family, and identifies herself as a Christian, and sits on the board for Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, Medmission. On September 6, 1996 she married Michael Haley, in a Methodist church ceremony. Michael is a federal employee with the United States Department of the Army and an officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Together they have two children, Rena and Nalin. Haley's brother Mitti is an active duty officer who has served in the U.S. Army for the past 20 years.
Candidate for South Carolina governor
On May 14, 2009, Nikki Haley announced she is running for the Republican nomination for Governor of South Carolina in 2010.
On November 11, 2009, Nikki Haley was endorsed by Jenny Sanford, the first lady of South Carolina. Haley was also endorsed by former Alaska Governor and GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin and former Massachusetts Governor and GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Recently she was hit by a sex scandal which is debied by her.
The mother-of-two, 38, whose husband is a United States Army reserves officer, has been hit by allegations she had a "physical" relationship with commentator Will Folks.
The claims are threatening to derail her campaign to replace the disgraced former governor Mark Sanford, who fell from grace after he was forced to admit having an affair. It is the latest scandal to hit South Carolina which is notorious for its brutal political culture.
The controversy erupted when Mr Folks posted a statement on his website claiming that "several years ago, prior to my marriage, I had an inappropriate physical relationship with Nikki. That's it".
Mr Folks offered no proof and later posted links to 26 articles covering his claim, stating that he had "uncharacteristically shut his pie hole in the wake of this morning's seismic revelations" and would maintain his silence. Mrs Haley, who was elected to South Carolina's House of Representatives 2004, has responded by saying the claim is a "disgraceful smear".
"I have been 100 per cent faithful to my husband throughout our 13 years of marriage. This claim against me is categorically and totally false. It is quite simply South Carolina politics at its worst," she said.
Mr Folks is a former aide to Mr Sanford, who famously told staff he was "hiking the Appalachian trail" while secretly flying to Argentina to meet his mistress María Belén Chapur. He later confessed all in a tearful press conference in which he said he wanted to be with his Argentine "soulmate".
Mr Folks pleaded guilty in 2005 to a charge of criminal domestic violence after police said he kicked open a door at the home he shared with a lobbyist and pushed her into a piece of furniture. He received a 30-day suspended sentence.
Mrs Palin, the former Alaska governor and possible 2012 Republican presidential candidate, has leapt to the defence of Mrs Haley, who had already become a heroine of the anti-government "tea party" movement that is becoming a major force in American politics.
"When Nikki and I held her endorsement rally on the steps of the beautiful and historic South Carolina state house a few weeks ago, I warned her and her family that she would be targeted because she's a threat to a corrupt political machine, and she would be put through some hell," said Mrs Palin.
"That, unfortunately, is the nature of the beast in politics today – especially for conservative "underdog" candidates who surge in the polls and threaten to shake things up so government can be put back on the side of the people."
Mrs Palin said that she told Mrs Haley in a telephone call: "Hang in there. I've been there. Any lies told about you will strengthen your resolve to clean up political and media corruption. You and your supporters will grow stronger through things like this."
Former governor Mr Sanford's jilted wife has also endorsed Mrs Haley, an Indian-American, was born Nimrata Randhawa. Mrs Haley's parents are Pubjabi Sikhs immigrants originally from Amritsar.
Mrs Haley, an accountancy graduate who used to work in her mother's multi-million dollar clothing firm started Exotica International, became the front-runner in the South Carolina race after Mrs Palin gave her backing.
Erick Erickson, South Carolina's most prominent conservative blogger, wrote that Mrs Haley had been smeared by "good old boys" who did not appreciate an "upstart" politician demanding transparency.
He concluded, Mr Folks was not a plausible candidate to be her lover: "Hot women do not cheat on men in uniform with ugly, poor dudes."

Elena Kagan: As a Supreme court justice Elena Kagan gives her First Opinion

Elena Kagan gives her First Opinion:
Justices Sonia Sotomayor (l.), Ruth Bader Ginsburg (c.), and Justice Elena Kagan in the Justices' Conference Room prior to Justice Kagan's Investiture Ceremony at the court in Washington on Oct. 1, 2010. Elena Kagan wrote her first opinion as a Supreme Court Justice, Tuesday.

Justice Elena Kagan delivered her first opinion for the Supreme Court Tuesday, siding with a credit card company in a bankruptcy dispute.
Supreme court justice Elena Kagan gives her First Opinion
The court, by an 8-1 vote, ruled against Jason Ransom, a debtor who wanted to shield some income from his creditors by claiming a $471 monthly allowance for a car payment.
The only problem is that he owns his 2004 Toyota Camry outright.
"In short, Ransom may not deduct loan or lease expenses, when he does not have any," Kagan said.
Although it seemed an easy issue, federal appeals courts had arrived at different answers.
And dissenting Justice Antonin Scalia said the courts that ruled for the debtors in these cases were right.
The allowance for car payments comes from a formula that sometimes produces odd results, Scalia said. "Our job, it seems to me, is not to eliminate or reduce those oddities, but to give the formula Congress adopted its fairest meaning," he said.
Kagan joined the court in August and had to sit out of eight of the 12 cases the justices heard in October because of her prior job as U.S. solicitor general in the Justice Department.
The bankruptcy case was one of the four she took part in during October.
The case is Ransom v. FIA Card Services, 09-907.
Biography of Elena Kagan

Review of Elena Kagan:
Politician, attorney. Born April 28, 1960, in New York City to parents Gloria and Robert Kagan. Kagan grew up as the second of three children in a middle class Jewish family living on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Kagan's mother was an educator, teaching students at Hunter College Elementary School. Her father worked as a longtime partner at the Manhattan law firm of Kagan & Lubic, working with tenant associations. Inspired by her father's work, Elena took an interest in law at an early age.

Also influenced by her mother's strong beliefs in getting a good education, Kagan attended Hunter College High School, an all-girls school that she later cited as a formative experience in her life. "It was a very cool thing to be a smart girl, as opposed to some other, different kind," she says. "And I think that made a great deal of difference to me growing up and in my life afterward." Kagan graduated from the institution in 1977 and headed to Princeton University, focusing on the goal of law school.

In 1981 she graduated summa cum laude from Princeton with a bachelor's degree in history. She also earned the Daniel M. Sachs Graduating Fellow scholarship from her alma mater, which allowed her to attend Worcester College in Oxford, England. She earned an M. Phil at Worcester in 1983, moving on immediately to Harvard Law School, where she became supervising editor of the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum laude in 1986.

After school, Kagan landed a job clerking for Judge Abner Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals. The next year, she began another clerking job, this time for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. During this time, she also worked for Michael Dukakis' 1988 presidential campaign. After Dukakis lost his bid for the presidency, Kagan headed to the private sector to work as an associate at Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C.

After three years at Williams & Connolly, Kagan turned back to the world of education—this time as a professor. She began teaching law at the University of Chicago Law School, and by 1995 she was a tenured professor of law. Kagan left the school that same year, however, to work as Associate Counsel for President Bill Clinton. During her four years at the White House, Kagan was promoted several times: first to the position of Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, and then to the role of Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council.

Before Clinton left office, he nominated Kagan to serve on the D.C. Circuit of Appeals. Her nomination languished with the Senate Judiciary Committee, however, and Kagan returned to academia in 1999. Starting as a visiting professor at Harvard Law, Kagan quickly climbed the ladder from Professor of Law in 2001 to Dean of the Law School in 2003. During her five years as the Dean of Harvard Law, Kagan made big changes at the institution, including faculty expansion, curriculum changes, and the development of new campus facilities.

Auto Biography of Miley Cyrus:
Miley Cyrus was born in Nashville, Tennessee November 23, 1992 just six months after her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, became a country and pop star when his song "Achy Breaky Heart" hit the charts. Her full name is Destiny Hope Cyrus, but she was given her nickname by her mother for her tendency to smile as a baby. "Smiley" was shortened to "Miley" and stuck. Other members of her family that are accomplished in the entertainment industry include step-brother Trace, a member of the band Metro Station, and younger sister Noah who is an actress.

Miley Cyrus
Young Miley Cyrus became an overnight sensation in 2006 as the star of the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana, but fortunately her family has had some experience with that sort of thing -- her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, went from obscurity to stardom in a few short months when the song "Achy Breaky Heart" hit the charts in 1992. The success of "Achy Breaky Heart" was hardly the only memorable event for Billy Ray that year -- on November 23, 1992, he and his wife welcomed their daughter Destiny Hope Cyrus into the world. Destiny's cheerful disposition as a child earned her the nickname Smiley, which stuck when it was shortened to Miley. Miley's career as a professional actress began in 2003, when she appeared in an episode of the television series Doc, which starred her father; the same year, she landed a small role in the Tim Burton film Big Fish. Miley developed an interest in music early on, writing songs and learning to sing while still a preteen, and in 2005 she landed a role that allowed her to put her skills in acting and music to work. Miley was cast in the title role of Hannah Montana, in which she played a teenage girl leading a double life -- by day, she's Miley Stewart, an ordinary kid dealing with school, her friends, her siblings, and all the other foibles of life for a 14-year-old, while a night she dons a wig and becomes Hannah Montana, a multi-platinum pop star whose career is guided by her dad Robby Stewart, a successful songwriter. However, Miley's friends don't know she's also Hannah, and keeping this a secret is no simple matter. Debuting in March 2006, Hannah Montana became an immediate success with young viewers, and in October, a soundtrack CD was released, featuring Miley singing eight songs from the show along with five related tracks, including a duet between Miley and her father Billy Ray on "I Learned from You." That fall, Miley hit the road, wowing audiences as the opening act for another Disney-spawned pop act, the Cheetah Girls, and in March 2007, the Hannah Montana album was reissued in a special edition featuring a bonus DVD, not long after the show's theme song, "The Best of Both Worlds," was released as a single. A second Hannah Montana album, Hannah Montana, Vol. 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, is scheduled for release on June 26, 2007. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
